Massage engages the functions of the parasympathetic nervous system

The parasympathetic nervous system helps recover from the effects of engaging the sympathetic nervous system

The sympathetic nervous system is responsible for maintaining awareness of our environmental factors and responding to environmental triggers by releasing stress hormones into the body

The energy from the release of these hormones goes into your muscles to allow you to "flee or fight" whatever you are facing, known as the fight or flight response

When released in moderation or only when really in need the energy from this process will ideally take care of itself; however, when excess stress hormones are released they can lead to physical ailments -- often times in the musculature for which they were intended to assist

The build-up of this energy can lead to unexplained pain, "knots" or trigger points, muscle tightness/tension, and restricted blood and nutrient flow within the muscle fibers

Massage shuts down the body's reaction to stress, helps the body reduce unnecessary stress hormones that have remained in the body, loosens muscles, allows you to rest, and has been scientifically proven to reduce pain.
